I recently wrote my first WordPress plugin, Swatchify, which takes the featured image from a post and generates a color palette from it. As part of this process I ran the plugin against all of the posts in my archive.

The result of this process is that all of my posts are now grouped by colors, hex codes, and dominant colors.

Whenever Swatchify runs it takes the palette generated and associates the post with the color taxonomies I programmed into it.

I have no idea what TV show this is right now, but I’m definitely going to look it up, and maybe watch a couple of episodes. The dialogue is a little dramatic, but the message is definitely there, and I thought it was a nice contentious “fuck you” to the people who still claim this is the greatest country in the world.

Buddha’s hand is a fruit native to Northeastern India and parts of china. It is arguably the coolest / ugliest fruit known to man. It looks like something you would see in a science fiction movie served to passengers on an post-apocalyptic intergalactic freighter.

I need to find this fruit, and make delicious drinks out of it. Does anyone happen to know of an asian supermarket in the area that might have this exotic fruit? If you do, hit me up on my contact page or in the comments section below.

Without any further delay here is how you make the delicious Buddha’s hand & thai basil cocktail, candied lemon peels, and cordial!

Buddha's Hand and Thai Basil Fizz

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Hangar One Buddha’s hand vodka
  • 1 1/2 oz Manzanilla sherry
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz Buddha’s hand cordial
  • 1/2 oz sparkling water
  • 5 large Thai basil leaves
  • 5 strips of candied lemon peel
  • Thai basil flower for garnish

Buddha’s Hand Cordial:

  • 2 tablespoons Buddha’s hand zest (~1 medium Buddha’s hand)
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup

Candied Lemon Peel:

  • 2 lemons
  • 6 oz simple syrup (~ 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water)

Buddha’s Hand Cordial:

The Buddha’s hand cordial is relatively simple, but you will need a badass zester. Once you have procured said badass zester, soak the Buddha’s hand zest in the simple syrup for 10 minutes. Strain the zest through a fine mesh strainer and se it aside.

Candied Lemon Peel:

Use a pairing knife or a peeler (if you’re a pussy) to remove strips of the peel while avoiding the nasty white pith. Cut the peel into narrow strips, and in a small saucepan over medium heat, bring your simple syrup to a simmer. Add the strips of lemon peel and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Your candied lemon peel is all done, and can be stored in the simple syrup until you are ready to use.

To make the cocktail:

Select several of the sexiest Thai basil leaves you can find and put the top portion of the sprig (the flower) for garnish.

Stack the leaves on top of each other and use a sharp knife to chiffonade into 1/4-inch strips. This will help to release the basil’s natural oils.  Add the strips to the bottom of your shaker.

Next, add the lemon juice, sparkling water, candied lemon peel, and Buddha’s hand cordial to your shaker.

Finally, add the vodka and the sherry. Briefly stir the ingredients together to incorporate. Add ice and give a quick shake for just a few seconds.

Pour the entire contents of your shaker into a tall glass.

The strips of Thai basil and lemon peel should disperse throughout the drink, clinging to the ice.

If they clump together, use a bar spoon to spread the strips throughout the glass.

Garnish with a Thai basil flower.

The aroma of the basil will fill your senses as you sip.

I’ve been looking for a good resource for learning the ins and outs of javascript, and up until this point everything I’ve found has been lacking. This page pulls all of the missing parts together it seems. I’m really looking forward to digging into all of the resources aggregated here, and following some of the individuals listed on the page.

This coming week I’ll be heading to Austria and then immediately moving into a new apartment in Boston’s South End! I’m beyond excited for this new apartment, and it seems like there is something awesome that I find every time I look around the neighborhood on Google maps!

Dunkin Donuts

There is a Dunkin Donuts literally right underneath our apartment. It’s crazy. I fully intend on waking up in the morning, getting a coffee, and walking 3 extra steps to the t. It’s going to be that easy.

Green Line + Orange Line

After getting my coffee in the morning I’ll be able to walk less than a hundre yards to either the orange line OR the green line where I can ride for 10 minutes to work. Sooooo simple.

Art Store

When coming back in the evening I will have to walk past the Utrecht art store. I’m either going to go broke living in this new apartment or create some amazing art that I can actually sell!

Restaurants

I’ve explored some of the neighborhood on Google Maps, and it seems like we have everything we need within a couple blocks of us. We have a pizza joint, a pub, a coffee place, and much much more!

The MFA

One of my favorite things to do is go to the MFA, and now I live within walking distance of it. In about 15 minutes I can make it to the MFA no problems!.

Whole Foods

Dave and I recently decided to shop at Whole Foods, because it’s actually cheaper to buy the stuff we normally buy there as opposed to the regular grocery store. Conveniently there is one right down the street from us!

Community Garden

Don’t know exactly how this will work, especially because it is winter, but this looks like it’ll be fun regardless!

Titus Sparrow Park

I always enjoy having a park nearby.Conveniently, there is a nice little jogging path right behind our apartment building that goes for about a half a mile and ends in a nice little park called Titus sparrow.

Ingredients:

  • 10oz. Ghirardelli white chocolate chips
  • 15 regular size Oreos, plus 3 more for topping

Directions:

Preparation: Line an 8×8 pan with enough parchment or wax paper for a 1 inch overhang on each side.

  1. Place chocolate in a double boiler over low heat and stir continuously, until chocolate is completely melted.  Transfer chocolate to a heat proof bowl and cool for 5 minutes. Add chopped Oreos and stir to combine. Pour mixture into pan. Use a spatula to smooth out top.
  2. Finely chop remaining Oreos and sprinkle on top. Chill for about 10 minutes until chocolate becomes solid.
  3. Lift whole bark out of pan by holding onto parchment or wax overhang. Split bark into pieces with a fork.

A few notes:

  • To shave off even more time use mini Oreos to bypass chopping regular size ones.
  • If white chocolate doesn’t suit your taste, use any chocolate that does.
  • You can leave the top bare but keep in mind it will look slightly grey from the mix of black Oreo crumbs against the white. To avoid the unappetizing grey tint either drizzle the top with chocolate or sprinkle finely crushed Oreos on top.
